pkmn_tournament's second challenge has been announced!

For our second shot, we are going back to Pokemon's roots and hosting a classic tournament. No gimmicks or strings attached... except you can't use legendaries. ;x

Here's the info!

Tournament: Challenge #2: Classic Style Debut!
Player Limit: 32
Battle Style: Single Battle
Team Size: Three (3) Pokemon
Level Limit: 30
Exceptions: Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mewtwo, Mew, Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Lugia, Ho-oh, Celebi, Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Latias, Latios, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Jirachi, Deoxys, Uxie, Mesprit, Azelf, Dialga, Palkia, Heatran, Regigigas, Giratina, Cresselia, Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus
Hold Items: None allowed!
Banned Moves: Set damage moves (such as Dragon Rage, Night Shade, Seismic Toss, and Sonic Boom)

You can choose your own teams and your Pokemon can use any moves it naturally learns (egg moves and heart scales are okay) up to level 30. TMs and HMs are both banned. If something passes through breeding and they don't naturally learn it before or at 30, delete the move.

These rules apply to the Pokemon as they exist in the Diamond and Pearl games. If you bring over a Pokemon from another game that learned something earlier and in D/P it doesn't learn it until after 30, delete the move. To make life easier, we'll just say that your Pokemon's OT has to be your D/P character. That way you are forced to comply with the movelists of the Sinnoh region.

Check on Serebii.net's Pokedex to confirm which moves are heart scaled and egged to avoid any confusion about what's okay and what isn't.

If you're interested in signing up, and I can't see why you wouldn't be, comment this thread with a confirmation. We created a trainer registry that you would register into so your information is easily accessible when necessary, so I highly recommend heading over there and signing up there as well. Ideally, we wanted that to be mandatory before participating in events, but with such a potentially large tournament such as this, we'll leave it more open. But... go register! ;]

There is no date set on the start of the first round, we'll be waiting to see what the trainer load is like. So in the meantime, sign-up here and in the registry, join the community, and keep a watch on your friends list for further notices!

REGISTRATION HAS CLOSED!

Sign me up!

I feel so honored to be in the finals of the currently running round, too. :D

Do we need to decide which Pokémon we're going to train for the tourney right now?

When you say egg moves, does that include TMs that can be passed down through breeding?

Like I have a Cubone that knows Flamethrower and Earthquake from breeding.

Hmm, that's a good question.

And the answer is... TMs and HMs are both banned. That includes what gets passed down, so if something DOES pass down, you best be deletin' that shit. ;o

Are you ever going to change that icon? It scares the bejesus out of me and then some. It's like a troll and a goblin had a fling and forgot the chicken corpse for fertile fluid collection.

I'd like to join, but I also have a few questions before I start making my team...

Firstly, can we use pokémon transferred from the GBA versions where move level restrictions are sometimes lower? For example, kirlia learns psychic at lv. 26 in R/S/E, but in D/P it doesn't learn it until lv. 31. Would I be able to use a gardevoir with psychic for the tournament, because I could get it below lv. 30 as a level-up move in the older games, even though in D/P it ordinarily wouldn't be able to learn the attack until later except via use of a TM? Similarly, could I use the Emerald move tutor to teach a lickitung rollout, then send it to D/P and evolve it before lv. 30, then delete rollout? In D/P lickitung can't learn rollout until lv. 33, so would lickilicky be usable at all for this tournament?

Also, items can now be used, right?

Hot damn, thanks for bringing that up. I've added to the rules above, but basically no. I'm making it so your Pokemon's OT has to be your D/P character, meaning you have to raise it in Sinnoh.

And hold items are still not allowed.

....Why is Rotom listed as a legendary pokemon? None of its base stats are 100 or more, as is the case with most of the legendaries. There is only one of them caught in the wild, but they can breed, so wouldn't that make them just like the one two Snorlax or one Sudowoodo that could be caught in previous games?

You bring up a good point. I've honestly always considered Rotom to be legendary because he's a one-shot and because he has unique battle music. But I wasn't aware they can breed, and since Manaphy is claimed to be "the only breedable legendary", you'd think Rotom was just a normal ol' Pokemon. I guess he's just special. ;p

Taken off the list.

bucue and I thought it would be appropriate to change things up a bit, that way we don't see all the final Dragon types and other super Pokemon. I think it'd be cool to be using middle-stages and whatnots since they aren't used. ;p

A question! If a pokemon doesn't learn a move naturally, but can learn it via egg move BUT it's also a TM move. Is that allowed?

As long as it's an egg move, it's fine.

Basicly what your saying is a Pokemon can only have moves it can naturally learn that are listed between Lv 1 and 30, Any compatable "Egg Move" per the listed egg moves on one of the many online pokedex listings, or any "Heart Scale" Move that only accessable by using a heart scale to learn it.

Any move that is a TM that is either only learned by TM, by passing threw breeding yet not listed as a Egg Move, or learned at a level above 30 Per it's evolution chain is forbidden.

If anyone is confused and I know I'm not officially anyone who works for this comm, if you need any help trying to figure out if a move set is allowed, I'll gladly look into it my self to assist with the cross refrences to see if it may be legal or not.

A few Online Dexs to check out for refrence materials are as follows;

Marriland Dex - http://pokemon.marriland.com/diamond_pearl/pokedex

Asking because I'm not sure.

If I breed roll out onto a lickitung (male + female knowing it) and then give it to a baby lickitung to evolve it, then remove it from the lickitungs move set, is this allowed?

It allows me to evolve earlier than "natural" learning, but doesn't technically break any rules. So erm.. How do we stand on this? It's your challenge so I figure lets ask you before I start doing it.

It isn't allowed because the second your Lickitung knew Rollout from hatching, it became an illegal Pokemon.

(We already talked about his over AIM, just putting it here for record. ;p)
